How many BTU do I need per square metre?
A common rule of thumb for Thai homes is roughly 600–700 BTU per square metre for a bedroom, 700–800 for a living room, and 800–900 for an office or shop with more people and equipment. This tool uses those ranges, then adds a heat-load allowance and a ceiling-height adjustment so the figure fits your specific room rather than a flat average.
Why does a hot or sun-exposed room need more BTU?
Rooms that face the afternoon sun, sit under a hot roof, have large windows or a west-facing wall gain a lot of extra heat during the day. To keep the same comfort level the air conditioner has to remove that extra heat, so ticking the heat-load box adds about 18% to the recommended BTU.
What are the common air conditioner sizes in Thailand?
Split-type units are usually sold in fixed sizes: 9,000, 12,000, 18,000, 24,000, 30,000 and 36,000 BTU. The calculator picks the smallest of these that covers the higher end of your recommended range, so you get comfortable cooling without paying for capacity you do not need.
Is it better to buy a bigger air conditioner to be safe?

Should I choose an inverter air conditioner?
Inverter models vary their compressor speed instead of switching fully on and off, so they hold a steadier temperature and use less electricity in rooms that run for many hours a day, such as bedrooms and offices. For a room used only briefly, a cheaper fixed-speed unit of the right BTU can still be a reasonable choice.
Is this BTU figure exact?
