Frequently asked questions

Is VAT in Thailand 7%?
Yes. The standard VAT rate in Thailand is 7%, a reduced rate the government has extended from the statutory 10%. This tool defaults to 7%, but you can change the rate for special cases such as zero-rated exports.
How do I extract VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?
Divide the gross amount by 1.07. A ฿1,070 VAT-inclusive price has a base of ฿1,000 and ฿70 of VAT. Select "Includes VAT (extract the VAT)" on the VAT tab and the tool does this for you.
Is withholding tax calculated before or after VAT?
Always on the amount before VAT. Withholding tax applies to the pre-VAT service or rental value, never to the VAT itself. Invoice ฿10,000 plus ฿700 VAT with 3% withholding and the tax withheld is ฿300 (3% of ฿10,000), not ฿321.
What are the common withholding tax rates in Thailand?
For payments to Thai companies and individuals: 1% on transport, 2% on advertising, 3% on most services and hire of work, and 5% on rent. Other income types can differ, so use the custom rate when needed.
How much does the supplier actually receive?
On a ฿10,000 service invoiced with 7% VAT and 3% withholding, you pay the supplier ฿10,400: ฿10,000 base plus ฿700 VAT minus ฿300 withheld. You remit the ฿300 to the Revenue Department and issue the supplier a withholding tax certificate.
